OVERVIEW

A family-focused, dog-friendly hotel on a cliff above glorious Mawgan Porth Beach. The building is retro but the vibe is modern with an emphasis on sustainability and wellbeing (think free yoga classes and craft workshops). There's plenty to keep children entertained and a spa for when you want time to yourself.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The hotel sits on a cliff above Mawgan Porth, a sandy beach with crashing waves, rockpools and caves. It's a quieter alternative to nearby Newquay but still has a lifeguard and surf school. The hotel's elevated position provides panoramic sea views and there are fabulous walks along this unspoilt stretch of coast.

By car: 1 hour 30 minutes from Exeter, under 3 hours from Bristol and 5 hours from London. Free parking on-site.

By train: London Paddington to Newquay takes around 5 hours. It's a 10-minute taxi to the hotel. Book trains to Newquay.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Once you step inside, the sea views make up for the hotel's uninspiring exterior. Rather than completely overhaul the building the owners have embraced its history with cheerful, retro-inspired scandi décor. Local crafts and art feature heavily and are on sale in the shop.

THE FACILITIES

There's plenty to keep children busy, even on a rainy day, with an indoor soft play area, craft room and three pools (one indoor). If you'd rather escape the children for a while there's a second restaurant off-limits to under 5s and the option of a spa treatment.

BED AND BATH

Rooms vary greatly from tiny doubles with no sea view to spacious family apartments. Opt for a villa closer to the sea with an uninterrupted view - the small patio makes the world of difference. Rooms are simply furnished in the hotel's signature scandi/retro style. Bathrooms are small but modern.

Room types: Cosy Double, Double, Sea View Double, Spacious Sea View, Family, Meadow Villa, Villa, Apartment

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

There's no hefty English breakfast here and it's all very trendy - think granola, smashed avocado and croissants from the on-site bakery. Both restaurants have sea views.

Wild Café: casual dining, seasonal menus. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Ogo: fine dining, local, and sustainable cuisine. Open daily for lunch, dinner and afternoon tea.

Bakery: Cornish treats with a twist and seasonal pastries; offers workshops, tastings and cookery classes
