THE LOOK AND FEEL

Mind your head; this cosy country pub is filled with nooks and crannies and low Tudor-style beams. Fortunately, they're padded so you can browse the British literary and military-related memorabilia without fear of banging your head. Antique furnishings and charming bedrooms with a stacked bookshelf add to the relaxed feel.

THE FACILITIES

Nothing is too much trouble for the staff here; our bags were carried to the room. Friendly waiters are knowledgeable about the dishes at dinner and are happy to chat and recommend wine and food. Facilities focus on the cosy bar which is busy with locals and does attract shooting parties.

Each of the five country-style rooms is different but they all feature characterful beams, huge Asian-inspired bell jars, antique furniture, a coffee machine and a charming wicker basket of teas and homemade biscuits. Bathrooms are spacious and come with invigorating power showers and lush vegan British bath products.

FOOD AND DRINK

The seasonal menu is inviting and the Devon crab, seabream with samphire and Orchard Farm pork with octopus are delicious. Homemade beetroot ice cream served with chocolate brownie is an acquired taste. Breakfast consists of healthy cereals and fruits and a cooked Full English with spinach and field mushrooms.

The Anchor Inn: traditional country pub, locally sourced produce. Mains include fish and chips, bavette steak and brisket burger. Open daily for food and beverages.
