Hidden away in the Herefordshire countryside, this good-looking black-and-white former coaching inn has nine beautiful rooms and serves outstanding food. Chef Patron Andy Link offers exceptional British cuisine in the restaurant, less formal bar and al fresco in warmer weather, when you can enjoy lovely rural views.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
The inn is eight miles from Leominster, beside the 1931 bridge over the River Lugg on the main road through Aymestrey. It is surrounded by pretty gardens and gorgeous countryside where guests can spot kingfishers, red kites and even otters, and fly fishing is available. There are walks galore, golf courses, Hereford's magnificent cathedral a half-hour drive away and foodie destination Ludlow within ten miles.
By car: around 1 hour 30 minutes from Birmingham, 2 hours from Bristol and 3 hours 30 minutes from York. There is free parking on site.
By train: Direct trains to Ludlow run from Cardiff (1 hour 30 minutes) and Manchester (1 hour 50 minutes). The hotel is a 20-minute taxi ride from Ludlow station. Book trains to Ludlow.
THE LOOK AND FEEL
Walk into the Riverside Inn Aymestrey and it feels like you've come home. There's a relaxed, welcoming ambience, a big wood burner for chilly nights and cosy candlelight in the evenings. The bar and restaurant have low ceilings, dark beams dressed with hop garlands, solid wood floors and pleasing art featuring country scenes and animals.

You can take a tour of the kitchen garden, order chocolates, flowers, champagne and packed lunches, eat at a table by the river or in the pretty garden or pick up a map for a nearby walk through ancient woodlands. There is one ground-floor room and ramped access to the bar area and facilities.
