OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The Lodge lies in a tranquil walled garden at the very feet of Canterbury Cathedral. It's an unbeatable location, within the historic Cathedral Precincts and at the heart of Canterbury, which sets it apart from all other accommodations in the city. Close by are Canterbury's tight-knit attractions, including the Marlowe Theatre, Dolphin Pub (best for gin aficionados) and Chapman's Seafood Bar & Brasserie.

By car: There is limited parking at the hotel which must be pre-booked before arrival. The hotel is two hours' drive from London on the M2.

By train: Canterbury East and Canterbury West are under ten minutes' drive or 15 minutes' walk from the hotel. Canterbury East: London Victoria (2 hours), Dover (20 minutes). Canterbury West: Margate and Ramsgate (20 mins), London St Pancras (55 mins), Charing Cross (1 hour 40 mins). Book trains to Canterbury.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The Lodge divides opinion with its contemporary take on Gothic architecture, intended to reflect the Cathedral's design. Built using local stone and timber with long, slim windows, the property's minimalist interiors and slightly hushed feel make it tranquil yet not monastic. The Campanile Garden is a delightful refuge in summer, ideal for lazy afternoon teas.

THE FACILITIES

Staff are professional yet warm, and uniformly knowledgeable about the Cathedral and other local attractions. Accustomed to hosting weddings and conferences, they'll try to accommodate your every request. Phone ahead to secure parking on-site, saving the relative hassle of parking at a local car park.

BED AND BATH

The three double bedrooms with large bay windows, which usher the Cathedral right into your room, are our absolute favourites. The Lodge filters, chills and carbonates its own water on-site; you'll find refillable bottles in your bedroom and a water station on the ground floor.

Room types: Ensuite Single, Twin and Double, Value Ensuites, Self-contained appartment

Key amenities: ensuite bathrooms, complimentary, tea and coffee-making facilities, telephones and LCD TVs with Freeview, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

Given the quality of breakfasts here, it's a shame that the Refectory Restaurant doesn't serve dinners. A true homage to Kentish produce, the à la carte menu is awash with classics like smoked kippers, eggs Benedict, bacon sandwiches and a Full English breakfast. There's a generous buffet too, with fresh fruits, cereals, juices and pastries.

Refectory Restaurant: modern and spacious, locally-sourced produce, terrace. À la carte dining available in summer only, full English breakfasts year-round. Two courses £25; three courses £30.
