Hotel Review: The Zetter Hotel, London

In the heart of creative Clerkenwell, on the corner of a quiet, leafy square, this hotel is in a great spot for exploring the eateries of pedestrianised Exmouth Market, where the famous Moro restaurant is. Farringdon station is just a few minutes away with connections to Brighton and Bedford. Nose-to-tail restaurant St John is a five-minute walk away, as is the popular nightclub, fabric London.

By car: the hotel is 4 hours 20 mins from Manchester, 2 hours 45 mins from Birmingham and 1 hour 30 mins from Cambridge.

By train: Farringdon station is seven minutes' walk away with connections to Brighton and Bedford. Liverpool Street is a 15-minute taxi ride away. Book trains to London.

This hotel has a colourful, contemporary boutique feel from the minute you walk into the bijou reception area. A playfully painted mural covers the wall by the lifts, and the desk is wood-panelled and curved with occasional neon stripes. A small bar area has plush velvet seats, and the restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows onto the street outside.

The hotel offers friendly, efficient service with the option to check in online before arrival and to check out digitally on departure. Facilities are limited as there is no pool or fitness area, but you can rent bikes to explore the local area, and the water in the property all comes from a borehole under the hotel.

The Zetter restaurant serves a modern British menu of seasonal produce, with starters such as roast quail with parsnip puree, golden beetroot and nasturtium and mains such as venison with butternut squash, potato puree, parmesan crust and truffle. Breakfasts are all made to order with exciting options such as halloumi, apricot harissa, avocado and poached eggs.
