Hotel Review
Dog & Fox, Wimbledon, London
Occupying a heritage building in the heart of Wimbledon Village, this gastropub has bedrooms worthy of a boutique hotel and a pleasingly old-fashioned approach to service. Though there's little in the way of facilities, everything you need is on your doorstep - and the price is a steal for London.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
Surrounded by upmarket shops and cafés, this property sits in the heart of chi-chi Wimbledon Village. It's a 15-minute walk to the area's namesake tube station, where trains will take you into central London, and ten minutes to the All England Lawn Tennis Club, home to the famous Championship tournament. On your doorstep is a wide range of places to eat, from Argentinian empanada joint Chango to The Ivy brasserie.
By car: around 45 minutes from London, 2 hours from Bristol and 4 hours from Manchester. Paid parking nearby.
By train: Wimbledon tube station is a 10-minute walk, and Raynes Park station is a 7-minute taxi-ride. Book trains to London.

THE LOOK AND FEEL
Downstairs is a large pub, its broad rooms lent cosiness by their sub-division into a series of smaller and more private spaces. The décor is enjoyably old school, featuring leather banquettes and bookshelves, plus nods to the area's tennis heritage. There's an open fire for the winter months, and an open terrace for the summer season.

THE FACILITIES
The staff here are memorably friendly, with everyone from the receptionist to the restaurant's duty manager offering attentive and personal service. As this is chiefly a pub-with-rooms (albeit a very nice one), there are no facilities to speak of except several popular function rooms used for weddings and other events.

BED AND BATH
The hotel's 28 peaceful rooms each have a unique design, and even the entry-level Boutique rooms are relatively spacious, with Hypnos beds and bathrooms supplied with Bramley toiletries. FOOD AND DRINK
As well as local beers, the commodious ground-floor pub offers an impressive gin list, plus classic cocktails including Old Fashioneds and Amaretto Sours. The dining room serves some genuinely excellent pub grub - such as burgers, ploughmans and a Sunday roast - plus a few surprises. Try the feta and spinach arancini to start.
Dog & Fox: elegant pub and restaurant, British cuisine, seasonal menus. All-day dining, open daily. Mains from £16.
