Hotel Review: Hotel Gotham, Manchester

Just a couple of minutes' walk away from St Peter's Square Metrolink station and a ten-minute walk from Piccadilly railway station, Hotel Gotham has an excellent, central location. The splendid buildings surrounding the hotel are home to restaurants, high-end shops and bars, while the Royal Exchange Theatre is just around the corner. Kala, also on King Street, offers relaxed bistro dishes, while El Gato Negro serves high-quality tapas. Nearby Sam's Chop House is an atmospheric Victorian boozer.

By car: around 1 hour 20 mins from Leeds, 2 hours from Birmingham and 4 hours 30 mins from London. There is private parking available at £35 per day.

By train: There are regular trains to Manchester Piccadilly from Birmingham New Street (1 hour 30 minutes) and London Euston (2 hours 10 minutes). Book trains to Manchester.

Geometric patterns and black and white 1920s-style pictures complement the original features of the Art Deco building, while lashings of gold - including a gold-tiled private members' club - show that the hotel is glitzy and proudly so. There are fun, theatrical touches too, such as a statue of a butler in reception and a hotel newspaper featuring its "cast".

From the bellboys who meet you at the door to managers who wear pin-stripe suits with pink braces, the staff are friendly and eager for you to have fun and spoil yourself. There's no gym or spa, this is a hotel to unwind and indulge yourself in.

Honey restaurant on the sixth floor offers a small menu of classic dishes with some interesting accompaniments, such as pan-fried monkfish with chickpea, aubergine, red pepper and pickled shallots. The accompanying wine menu is vast. Club Brass on the seventh floor is worth a visit for a pre or post-dinner cocktail.
