OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Hotel Indigo is ideally located for exploring Newcastle, a few minutes' walk from the station and the city centre and with plenty of shops, restaurants and venues in the surrounding streets. Though it's just off a main road, near several bus stops, it doesn't feel too noisy.

By car: over 5 hours from London and 3 hours from Manchester. On-site parking costs £14 per day.

By train: London Kings Cross to Newcastle takes around 3 hours. The hotel is a 4-minute taxi ride (or 4-minute walk) from the station. Book trains to Newcastle.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The building itself could be anywhere, but its interior design thoughtfully includes elements of the city's visual identity. This is most obvious in the rooms, which have feature walls showing iconic Newcastle buildings, but is also subtly incorporated elsewhere; there's plenty of use of black and white, to match the football team's colours.

THE FACILITIES

With everything you could need right outside the door, Hotel Indigo keeps its facilities streamlined - a bar-restaurant, small 24-hour gym and on-site parking. It's the service which makes the hotel special, with friendly, knowledgeable staff who strike that tricky balance of being proactive and friendly without ever becoming overbearing.

BED AND BATH

The 148 rooms are all well-sized and have shower-only bathrooms. Décor tends towards the monochrome, livened up with splashes of a feature colour. Rooms on higher floors have great views, of everything from St James' Park to the cathedral's Gothic lantern tower.

Room types: Standard Room, Balcony Room, Corner Suite

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities, mini fridge, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

Named after Newcastle's Grainger Town district, the Grainger Bar & Restaurant is a laidback spot for a light lunch or simple dinner. The evening menu focuses on hearty dishes done well - fish and chips with Grainger Ale batter or a 12-hour braised ragù. At breakfast, you can choose from a buffet or order hot dishes.

Grainger: ground-floor restaurant and lounge. Dishes include burgers, steak and fish & chips. All-day dining, open daily.
