OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

In its own grounds, approached by country roads and with surrounds of farmland and woodland, it's in a peaceful location with no neighbouring buildings. It lies six miles to the south of the A69 between Newcastle and Carlisle, with the nearest towns being Corbridge and Hexham. Roman Fort sites - Chesters, Housesteads and Vindolanda - on Hadrian's Wall are 30 minutes to the north while Derwent Reservoir (sailing and picnicking) is ten minutes in the other direction. Corbridge and Hexham offer independent shopping, Hexham Abbey, tea rooms and restaurants.

By car: around 2 hours from York, 3 hours from Manchester and 6 hours from London. Free parking on-site.

By train: trains from Manchester (3 hours 30 minutes) and London King's Cross (4 hours) to Hexham. It's a 20-minute drive to the hotel. Book trains to Hexham.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

It's a hotel of two parts with well-preserved rooms in the original Edwardian core with dark-oak panelling, bay windows and rich wallpapers and the majority of the hotel in modern, sandstone extensions. With a bold masculine feel in plum and grey colours, dark tartan carpets and black-framed mirrors, the overall feel is of a smart, private members club.

THE FACILITIES

There's plenty to do and plenty of space to relax. Active types have a choice of two golf courses, a pool and a gym, plus woodland walks (clay-pigeon shooting can also be arranged). For those wanting to relax, there's an Elemis spa and a choice of two lounges, as well as two bars, a conservatory and a terrace. Staff are plentiful and always happy to help.

BED AND BATH

It's a large hotel with generous-sized bedrooms, most in an inoffensive contemporary-classic style of wood-veneer furniture, modern armchairs, muted colours and a low-key feature wall. The handful of suites in the original hall have grander design features and big windows. All rooms have excellent bathrooms with bath as well as shower.

Room types: Classic Room, Superior Room, Family Room, Suite

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities, desk, sitting area, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

There's a choice of dining options: standard brasserie dishes such as Caesar salad, steaks and braised lamb shank in the large and buzzing main restaurant or crowd-pleasing burgers, pizzas and homemade pies in the two bars. Although not fine dining, dishes are filling and efficiently served. A decent range of drinks and cocktails is available.

Mr Kennedy's Brasserie: main dining room, classic British cuisine. Dishes include confit duck leg and pork belly. Open daily for breakfast and dinner.

The Claret Jug: informal clubhouse restaurant, all-day dining. Open daily, 8:30am-9:30pm.
