OVERVIEW

A stylish makeover has turned a once-popular local pub into a modest but comfortable B&B on the edge of central Oxford. The ten rooms are simple but cosy and the atmosphere is more like a family home with friendly, helpful staff that know the city like the back of their hand.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Conveniently located but on the busy Botley Road, The Osney Arms can suffer from street noise, especially in the front rooms. There's a bus stop right outside the door, but it's only a five-minute walk to the train station, 10 minutes to Oxford Castle, and 15 to the colleges and museums. The Thames is a five-minute walk, there's a Waitrose down the road and a good choice of local pubs.

By car: the journey from London or Bristol takes around 1 hour 30 minutes and just over 3 hours from Manchester. Off road parking for guests is available.

By train: 50 minutes from London Paddington, 1 hour 20 minutes from Bristol Temple Meads and 2 hours 45 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly. The hotel is a five-minute walk from Oxford train station. Book trains to Oxford.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The uncluttered contemporary styling gives the B&B a tranquil atmosphere, which is reinforced by a neutral palette with touches of deep, earthy tones in the soft furnishings. Period details surface in every room, from original fireplaces and 1930s additions to a scattering of antique and replica furniture.

THE FACILITIES

Facilities are limited as this is a B&B rather than a hotel, but prices reflect this. The rooms and bathrooms are well kept and equipped, there's a small courtyard garden at the back, free off-road parking, additional free parking nearby and staff who go out of their way to help.

BED AND BATH

The rooms are bright and simple with an uncluttered contemporary style and period details such as original fireplaces and a scattering of antique furniture. Bathrooms are modern, and although the two attic rooms share a bathroom, it's a beautiful space tucked under the eaves with a free-standing, roll-top bath.

FOOD AND DRINK

There isn't a restaurant or bar on-site, and cooked breakfasts are not served, but to compensate, there's a comprehensive range of continental breakfast items on offer. You can feast on fresh fruit salads, yoghurts, pastries, cereals, cold meats and a good selection of cheeses served in the pleasant breakfast room.

Breakfast: While there is no restaurant, guests can expect breakfast in a well-lit dining room at a long antique table, featuring a selection of continental breakfast items, from cold meats and cheese to fresh fruit salad, yoghurts, cereals, jams and pastries.
