Fischer’s Baslow Hall, Baslow, Peak District

The hall, at the northern end of Baslow, is set slightly up and back from the main road, surrounded by five acres of grounds. It's easy to drive to, with no need to navigate narrow country lanes, but also accessible by public transport: buses to and from Sheffield run past the gate. Attractions close at hand include Chatsworth House, the plague village of Eyam, Castleton's caverns and the wild moorland of the Dark Peak.

By car: the hotel is 30 mins from Sheffield, 1 hour 30 mins from Birmingham and 3 hours 20 mins from London. There is free parking on-site.

By train: London St Pancras to Chesterfield takes 1 hour 45 mins. The hotel is a 20-minute taxi ride from the station. Book trains to Chesterfield.

This early Edwardian manor house, built from local sandstone and slate, successfully recreates the look of a 17th-century hall but has undergone thorough renovations. The result: you get lashings of Jacobean-style character and charm combined with 21st-century facilities and freshly decorated rooms.

Reception sells tickets for Haddon and Chatsworth Halls and keeps details of nearby walks. Service is professional, friendly and happy to go the extra mile if needed - when a couple of neighbouring diners found they couldn't get a cab back to their hotel, one of the waiting staff jumped in to offer a lift.

Rooms are spread over the main house and garden annexe. Main house rooms feel slightly grander while the garden rooms have a more contemporary edge, but all are fresh, light and luxuriously decorated with designer fabrics and Farrow & Ball paints. There are Bramley products in the recently renewed bathrooms.

This is a destination restaurant, recommended in the Michelin Guide, so it's no surprise to find that it serves up very fine food, based on classical techniques but incorporating modern influences and flavours. As well as à la carte dishes, there's a seasonal tasting menu at weekends and the option of dining at the kitchen tasting bench.
