The bar and restaurant are cosy thanks to roaring fires, and the atmosphere is lively and relaxed. Newspaper cuttings and an 1850 inventory - the pub sold for 47,15 shillings and six pence - document its history.
Service is efficient, and the waiters are happy to answer questions about the inn's history, the food or the company's ale. If they don't know, they find out. Outdoors, there are walking trails to explore and al fresco weir-side dining to savour. Inside, fireside armchairs, log fires and newspapers beckon on cold nights.

Seven stylish bedrooms, named after local villages, are furnished in neutrals and come with leafy patterned wallpaper, light wood furniture and matching throws and cushions with splashes of burnt orange. Timber-framed rooms in the original building are romantic and more characterful. King-sized beds are comfy and the linen is crisp. Bathrooms have rain showers.

The quality of the locally sourced food is excellent. Specials are inviting, with pan-fried sea bass with harissa garlic butter hitting the spot. A delicious full English breakfast is gargantuan (only Continental midweek).
