OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

One thousand acres of National Trust-owned heathland surrounding the hotel provide excellent walking and cycling in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There's a quiet road between the hotel and the lake, where a sandy beach, swimming in designated areas, and sailing are popular in summer. You'll find the market town of Farnham, Alice Holt Forest, Birdworld, Waverley Abbey and the fascinating Sculpture Park featuring works of all shapes and sizes nearby.

By car: 1 hour 20 minutes from London, around 45 minutes from Portsmouth, just under 2 hours from Canterbury. Free parking is available.

By train: Farnham Railway Station, with regular services to Guildford, Woking and London Waterloo, can be reached in a 10-minute drive. Book trains to Farnham.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Stylish design blends with artistic touches from the owner - cue marble elephants, Buddha statues and stunning glass murals. Arty photographs of the foliage, trees and berries provide a window on the abundant nature around the lake. Bedrooms are stylishly decorated in natural pastels and suites are named after trees. The ambience is relaxed.

THE FACILITIES

Excellent, friendly and helpful service, from check-in at reception to dishes delivered swiftly in the Watermark restaurant. Only an unhelpful barman lets the side down. As well as a spa and gym, there's a waterside decking area which is perfect for cocktails al fresco and a garden and terrace where afternoon tea is served, and packed lunches are available.

FOOD AND DRINK

Hearty portions are locally sourced and beautifully presented in the brasserie-style Watermark restaurant. A table d'hote menu covers all bases, and the seared tuna and baked chicken are tasty. Breakfast is a triumph with plenty of choice, delicious homemade pastries on the buffet and wonderful, freshly-cooked sausages in the Full English.
