OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

In the heart of the quiet Surrey Hills but within easy reach of the pretty high streets, boutiques and markets of Guildford and Dorking, eight miles away. Gomshall railway station is ten minutes by taxi but trains to central London take an hour. Trains to Guildford and Dorking are quicker and more frequent. Head to Pitch Hill, Newlands Corner and Leith Hill for stunning views or historic Polesden Lacey, Clandon Park, RHS Wisley and the Denbies Wine Estate.

By car: 1 hour 20 minutes from London, 2 hours 20 minutes from Birmingham and 4 hours from Manchester. There is free parking on site.

By train: there is a direct train service to Guilford from London Waterloo which takes 40 minutes. The hotel is a 20-minute cab ride from the station. Book trains to Guildford.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The décor, in restful neutrals, is enhanced by bold mirrors and pretty cushions. Attractive artworks, pewter ornaments and glass tumblers feature adorable local wildlife and nature - foliage, foxes, rabbits and butterflies. Attractively designed coasters persuade guests to 'leave used teabags here' and umbrellas are conveniently stationed by the front door.

THE FACILITIES

Staff are attentive and efficient. There's a shared kitchenette on the first floor with a fridge, filter water, additional coffee and tea, wine glasses and a corkscrew. A comfy lounge offers sofas, television, a selection of magazines, books and games for guests to enjoy. Wine and soft drinks can be bought at reception.

BED AND BATH

As befits a 100-year-old former inn, every room is different but all are light and airy and decorated in a neutral palette. Deluxe, superior and classic rooms come with a sofa or chair, coffee machine and Cole & Lewis toiletries; superior and deluxe rooms have a super king-sized bed and bath with shower overhead.

Room types: Classic, Superior, Deluxe rooms

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom, king size bed, smart TV, tea and coffee-making facilities, Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

Breakfast is the only meal served here. A superb cold buffet ticks all the boxes with its display of fresh melon, kiwi, berries, cereals and creamy Greek yoghurt. And a perfectly-cooked full English hits the spot. The Hurtwood Inn next door excels, offering pasta, pizza and Italian specialities - cue black truffle lasagne and Tuscan sausages.

Breakfast: continental or full English options. Served 7.30-9.30am weekdays and 8-10am at weekends.

The Hurtwood Inn: pub & restuarant adjacent to hotel, Italian cuisine. Mon-Fri 5-9pm Sat-Sun 12-9pm. Mains from £13.50.
