OUR REVIEW
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
The manor sits in the lovely village of Cuckfield, which has some smart boutiques and is close to Haywards Heath station. You can day trip to Brighton, several vineyards, gardens and National Trust properties, Hickstead show jumping and the Bluebell steam railway. The heritage gardens at Nymans, Leonardslee, Wakehurst and Borde Hill are within easy reach. Jeremy's restaurant at the latter is well regarded if you're dining out.
By car: The hotel is 1 hour 45 minutes' drive from London and 40 minutes from Brighton. Free parking.
By train: London Victoria to Haywards Heath takes around 45 minutes, and it's a ten minute taxi ride to the hotel. Book trains to Haywards Heath.
THE LOOK AND FEEL
Lattice windows, beams, open fires and the odd four-poster bed are the stock in trade here. The dining room and some bedrooms overlook the grounds with uninterrupted countryside views. The spa maximizes this aspect from its pool and terrace, while its contemporary bedrooms have great style.
THE FACILITIES
There was a wait at reception, but waiters were well informed, and the spa therapists were smart and welcoming. The spa is easily among the best in Sussex, and the therapists took the time to explain the treatments. There is space to relax indoors and out when you're not in the pool.

BED AND BATH
Rooms in the manor house are classically furnished, and some have four-poster beds. The feature suite, in the Tudor part of the house, has old oak panelling. The spa block, by contrast, has contemporary suites with colourful feature headboards and freestanding baths.
Room types: Cosy, Cuckfield, Sussex, Junior Spa Suite, Master Suite, Feature Room
Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with Temple Spa toiletries, TV, phone, dressing gowns, tea and coffee tray with homemade biscuits, hairdryer, free Wi-Fi
FOOD AND DRINK
The food is good, and there's silver service and a lovely view but the Sussex dinner menu felt overly pricey for those not on full board. Lunchtime set menus are much better value. Tasting menus (including vegetarian versions) suit special occasions. There's an extensive wine list with some local and far-flung options. Complimentary canapés came with our drinks in the bar.
The restaurant: elegant, European cuisine made with local produce. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon tea. 7am-11pm (8am at weekends). Three courses for £65.
