OVERVIEW

This country house hotel is convenient for Bath and Bradford-on-Avon. It has historic features but caters mainly to families, offering lots of stress-busting services and a relaxed atmosphere. Some might find the furniture a little too "shabby-chic", but parents love the creche, babysitting and spa, while children enjoy the two pools.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The hotel is set on 14 acres on the edge of pretty Bradford-on-Avon, not far from Bath. It is only a 20-minute walk downhill to Bradford-on-Avon's charming old centre, with pleasant views along the way. Be sure to look in at the quaint George pub, while The Bunch of Grapes is an accomplished, fashionable small restaurant in the town centre.

By car: around 40 minutes from Bristol, 2 hours 30 minutes from London and 3 hours 30 minutes from Manchester. There is free parking on site.

By train: there is a direct service from from Bristol Temple Meads to Braford-on-Avon, the journey takes 33 minutes, while from Bath Spa a train takes 39 minutes. The hotel is a 6-minute taxi ride from Bradford-on-Avon station. Book trains.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

This gabled country house hotel has bags of character but a rather "lived-in" feel. The lounges are grand, with fireplaces and antique furniture, but the emphasis is on enjoyment and comfort, with toy chests available for children. Guests wanting an elegant and sophisticated environment might prefer to go elsewhere.

THE FACILITIES

Staff are well accustomed to meeting the needs of families. Parents of young children will appreciate the Ofsted-rated creche, baby-listening service and milk bottle sterilizing, parents of older children will enjoy the games rooms and heated outdoor pool, open May - September.

FOOD AND DRINK

The adults dine in a fairly formal, candlelit room with menus that celebrate local, seasonal produce. The menu is not cheap but the food is of a high standard and parents treasure the time alone to enjoy the food they haven't prepared themselves. Plus, they have a good wine list.

The Restaurant: 2 AA Rosettes, sophisticated fine dining, homegrown produce. Open daily. Mains from £21.50.

The Orangery: relaxed, family friendly, brasserie food. Open daily. Mains from £14.50.
