OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Hotel Kompas is in sheltered Lapad Bay north of Dubrovnik's Old Town. It faces Sunset Beach and it's a five-minute walk to the bus that takes you to the Old Town in ten minutes. Lapad's beaches, restaurants and family atmosphere make this one of Dubrovnik's most popular areas for a beach holiday. Next door is pedestrianised Šetalište Kralja Zvonimira, with its cafés and restaurant terraces. You'll find more beaches just to the south.

By plane: direct flights from London to Dubrovnik take 2 hours 30 minutes. The hotel is a 35-minute drive from the airport. Free parking available. Book flights to Dubrovnik.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

High ceilings and floor-length windows bring a welcome sense of openness and airiness, letting those Adriatic views speak for themselves. The design is pleasingly minimalist and immensely stylish with hints of cool Sixties décor, which is what you want in this light-filled place. Chic neutral tones enhance the feeling of sophistication.

THE FACILITIES

Service is friendly and professional. Head to the first-floor terrace where there's a large outdoor pool, sunloungers and the poolside Luna Bar. There's another pool inside the spa on the same level, and several rows of sunbeds on Sunset Beach reserved for guests. Its penthouse conference centre can accommodate 420 people.

BED AND BATH

All of the contemporary rooms and suites have balconies and marble bathrooms, and only a few don't come with sea views. Along with a soothing palette of beige and cream and some creative lighting, Croatian designer Saša Šekoranja adds swirling charcoal sketches to large grey panels above the bed.

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, balcony, air conditioning, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The ground-level Sphere Restaurant does a buffet breakfast and dinner (occasionally à la carte) featuring a good range of local seafood and Dalmatian specialities. On the same terrace is the Lounge Bar, a popular spot for happy hour. Head to the 10th floor for a sundowner in the impossibly chic Zenith Bar.

Sphere Restaurant & Lounge: beach views, serving Mediterranean cuisine. Open daily for buffet breakfast and à la carte dinner.

Zenith Bar: rooftop bar, serving fine wines and imaginative cocktails. Open daily.
