THE LOOK AND FEEL

Dating from 1870, this monumental seven-storey building comes with a frenzied and uplifting style that starts with an eye-catching lobby shop and continues to a large and lively first-floor bar and restaurant. The warren-like corridors feature raspberry-coloured walls with grey doors and carpets, guest rooms are an eclectic jumble of colours, patterns and objects, from Ghanaian dolls and Asian money tins to retro telephones.

THE FACILITIES

The ground floor lobby/reception comes with an extensive shop selling drinks, bags, towels, clothes, postcards and sunglasses. Here, bikes can be hired, luggage stored and water bottles refilled. On the first floor there are old school typewriters where you can write a letter that the hotel will mail for you.

FOOD AND DRINK

The NENI restaurant specialises in balagan cuisine (Hebrew for 'sympathetic chaos'), which relishes the flavours and fusions of the eastern Mediterranean. It's justifiably popular so book ahead and be prepared for loud music and low, uncomfortable seating. A satisfying buffet breakfast is served here.

NENI: Arabic, Persian and French cuisine, sharing plates. Open daily, 7am-11pm. Sunday brunch served 12-3pm.

Sape Bar: elegant bar, serving cocktails, wines and spirits. Open Mon-Sat, 5pm-1am.
