Hotel Review: Maison Colbert, Paris

You're in the 5th arrondissement on the east side of rue de l'Hotel Colbert, between rue la Boucherie and rue Lagrange. This is a narrow, historic street with a former medical faculty built in 1745 next door. The closest Métro station is Maubert-Mutualité.

By plane: flights from London or Manchester to Paris Charles De Gaulle take 1 hour 15 minutes and the hotel is a 40-minute drive. Book flights to Paris.

By train: Eurostar from London to Paris Gare du Nord takes 2 hours 20 minutes and the hotel is a 20-minute drive. Book trains to Paris.

The five-storey building is set around a small, plant-filled, street-facing courtyard. Interiors pay homage to the Spanish Impressionist painter Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) with large reproductions and details from his romantic portraits and landscapes decorating the aquamarine corridors. With its cute pink sofas and an antique display case, the lobby feels like you are visiting his home.

Guests are welcomed with a glass of cava at check-in then escorted to their room. The courteous staff sport smart blue uniforms and many speak Spanish. As there is no dinner restaurant they will happily offer advice on nearby options. A complaint that the room was cold was quickly resolved with the provision of a portable heater.

The 39 rooms include two suites on the top floor and are immaculately finished. The look is the same throughout but there are ten different colour schemes. The smallest rooms have plush drapes, crisp linen and a laminated wood floor. Bathrooms are bright and full of mirrors.

The smart ground floor Café Clotilde, named in honour of Sorolla's wife, fills one wing of the building with pretty tables and chairs set out in the courtyard. It is only open from Wednesday to Sunday, 12-8pm, but is a pleasant spot for a drink and snacks such as filled brioche, salad or some Iberian ham.

Café Clotilde: café, tea-room and cocktails, French cuisine. Dishes include toasted sandwiches, charcuterie and pastries. Open Wed-Sun for lunch.
