OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

In the 20th arrondissement on the north side of rue de Bagnolet, look for a modern block between rue des Pyrénées and rue Saint-Blaise. Several Métro stations are a five to ten-minute walk away, including Porte de Bagnolet and Alexandre Dumas. Underground parking is available at a charge. Climb the steps behind the hotel then head west to Père Lachaise, one of the most famous cemeteries in Paris, where luminaries from Marcel Proust to Jim Morrison are laid to rest.

By plane: Flights from London or Manchester to Paris Charles De Gaulle take 1 hour 15 minutes and the hotel is a 30-minute drive. Parking costs €25 per day. Book flights to Paris.

By train: Eurostar from London to Paris Gare du Nord takes 2 hours 20 minutes and the hotel is a 20-minute drive. Book trains to Paris.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

This contemporary, seven-storey building is nothing special to look at. Step inside, though, and it's awash with Mama Shelter's messages of welcome and love - on the walls, crockery, guest room mirrors and even the soap bars. The mood is casual and studenty, jumbling colours and styles with soft lighting, warm woods and fun finds.

THE FACILITIES

The staff are young and cheery but the service is far from slick so you may have to do some chivvying. Essential items along with children's toys, sex aids and Mama Shelter-branded clothes and accessories are on sale beside the reception. Rooms have free movies, including X-rated. It's also worth noting that check-out is not until 12 noon.

BED AND BATH

The rooms are categorised like T-shirts - S, M, L, XL and XXL with the last being the best option for families. All rooms have a queen size bed with high-quality linen and a compact shower room with white tiles and chrome fittings. The black or bare concrete walls contrast with neon-bright furniture.

Room types: S, M, L, XL, XXL

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, coffee making facilities, hairdryer, slippers, desk, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

With its central bar, patterned banquettes and a black ceiling covered in quotes and phrases, the large restaurant and adjacent terrace attract both hotel guests and non-residents. At weekends a DJ plays till 1.30am while the please-all menu romps from foie gras and burrata to tuna katsu and rum baba. There is a kid's menu but no room service.

Restaurant: cosy dining, international cuisine and Napolitan pizzas. Open Mon-Sat for lunch and dinner, Sun for brunch and dinner.

Rooftop: city views, comfy seating. Burgers and snacks, bespoke cocktails. Open May-Sep, 6-11pm.
