THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The hotel couldn't be more conveniently located; it is close to the harbour, art museum, bakeries and restaurants galore. Renowned Apotek restaurant is a few doors down, with the food market and street stalls leading up to it. The meeting point for most tours and just about anything else worth going to in Reykjavík is within reach.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The hotel embodies the glamourous roaring 20s, with a definite Art Deco theme from furniture to overall style. It is the product of the vision of Icelandic strong-man Jóhannes Jósefsson, who succeeded in building Iceland's first luxury hotel which has become an iconic landmark. The historical black and white photographs of locals and their pursuits add context and interest.

THE FACILITIES

All the staff from the housekeeping to the spa and reception to restaurant waiters were eager to offer local tips on where to go whilst in town, helping to shape the day's plan from a local's point of view, which is invaluable.

BED AND BATH

The rooms are as though you've stepped back in time to the previous century. Expect Art Deco panelled headboards, glass Bankers lamps on polished wooden desktops, vintage style glass globe bedside lamps, veneered parquet floors and geometric printed cushions. Marble bathrooms have underfloor heating.

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities, desk, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The restaurant, with its large windows looking out onto Parliament square, is rather smart, as is the food offering. As expected, fresh local seafood and fish feature, from Langoustine and scallop vol-au-vents to gravlax, cucumber, apples and toast. Meat lovers will also be pleased - the rack of lamb was cooked to perfection.

Restaurant Borg: traditional Icelandic and classic European cuisine. Open Wed-Fri for lunch, Wed-Sun for dinner. Live music on Fri-Sat, 7-9pm.
