The hotel is a little removed from the main sights of central Florence, about a 15-minute walk from the Duomo. What you miss in centrality is compensated for by the 11-acre gardens, which are an oasis of tranquillity in the heat of summer. A shuttle bus runs regularly into the centre.

The hotel is packed with unique architectural features, including bas reliefs dating back to the 16th century in the central lobby. Original carvings, painted ceilings and stucco work are complemented by choice pieces of antique furniture. The interiors were styled by Pierre-Yves Rochon who also worked on the George V in Paris.

Rooms are full of understated elegance: green marble vanity units in the bathrooms, antique desks and large, comfortable beds. Heavy jacquard curtains hang at the windows, while glass chandeliers provide atmospheric light.

Begin with a pre-dinner spritz in the Atrium bar to a piano accompaniment, then head to Michelin-starred Il Palagio for the finest Italian cuisine. Signature dishes include smoked risotto with seasonal cabbage and marinated aubergine with tomato and rhubarb ice cream.
