OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Situated between the railway station and the historic city centre on pedestrianised Piazza Santa Maria Novella - which hosts events in the summer months - most key sights, such as the central market and the designer boutiques of Via Tornabuoni, are a short distance.

By plane: flights from London to Florence take over 2 hours. It's a 20-minute drive to the hotel. Parking nearby costs €45 per day. Book flights to Florence.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

On entering, you're struck by the open lobby area that leads to the restaurant, lobby bar, breakfast room, lounge areas and atrium garden. Areas of the building date back to the Middle Ages when it was part of the Santa Maria Novella convent (although there's little evidence left from this time) and you'll find 18th-century frescoes on the first floor. However the most dominant features date from the 1950s, when celebrated architect Carlo Scarpa redesigned it, including the curved mid-century dining chairs and chequerboard marble floor.

THE FACILITIES

The rooftop pool is the real draw here, with a bijou bar from which to watch the sunset with 360 degree views. Staff are passionate about the hotel and its environs and will help you make the most of your stay. A small gym looks over the square, while the caldarium features a warm pool with water jets.
