OUR REVIEW
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
With the sheer amount of activities and land in the property, it is easy to stay in situ but if you want to venture out, Galway city is close by car where you'll find traditional Irish pubs playing live folk music, cafes and restaurants. If you like walking by the coast, go to Connemara.
By plane: flights from Birmingham and Edinburgh to Shannon take 1 hour 15 minutes; and London to Shannon takes 1 hour 30 minutes. A taxi will take over an hour to the hotel. Free on-site parking. Book flights to Shannon.
THE LOOK AND FEEL
The 18th-century building façade is immediately impressive. Expect silky patterned walls, grand fireplaces with gilt framed mirrors above, highly polished parquet flooring, sparkling chandeliers, heavy-weighted luxurious curtains and accents of gold in the original wing paired with modern furnishings, muted colours and clean lines in the modern part.
THE FACILITIES
There are quite a few activities to keep the active and curious amused, from falconry and fishing to cycling and golf, all with experts on hand to guide you. For something less active, book a river cruise or watch a film at the Abbey Movie Theatre.

BED AND BATH
Opulent rooms and bathrooms have cream, muted green and gold silky fabrics. From the walls and curtains to the gilt-edged chairs, there's a rich, sumptuous feel. Alongside the old-school glam are modern amenities such as Nespresso machines. Garden and Lough Corrib views add to the appeal.

FOOD AND DRINK
Afternoon tea at the hotel is popular - the Waldorf chicken salad with grapes, walnuts and buttery brioche stood out. Book dinner 'on board' the Pullman restaurant - two carriages from the original Orient Express - and try the Irish mule cocktail.
Pullman Restaurant: 2 AA-Rosette restaurant, fine dining. Open daily for dinner.
Palmers Bar & Kitchen: casual all-day dining, open daily.
Oak Cellar Bistro: traditional Irish cuisine, open seasonally, Tue-Sat for dinner.
