OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Casa Fantini's location in little Pella on the western shore is a welcome breath of fresh air - you're well away from the tourist crowds but you're just across the water from Orta San Giulio (a five-minute boat ride away). Plus, the views of the lake island are equally divine from here.

By plane: direct flights from London (under 2 hours) and Manchester (2 hours 15 minutes) to Milan Malpensa. The hotel is an hour's drive from the airport. Free private parking available nearby. Book flights to Milan.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Designed by renowned architect and designer Piero Lissoni, the hotel's look is cool and stylish, exuding a sophisticated yet laidback air. Wood, stone, metal and glass dominate, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering lovely vistas and seemingly merging inside and out. Kitchen utensils and tableware neatly line shelves in the large living area, while a long communal table encourages guests to mingle. Plush sofas, designer chairs and mismatched mirrors on the walls add a fashionable touch.

THE FACILITIES

A young and welcoming team provides friendly yet discreet service. Plenty of activities can be organised, including excellent guided tours in the area. The hotel has its own boat, providing complimentary trips to the lake island. There's a (small) sleek and stylish swimming pool in the garden - a great little spot to sit back and soak up your surroundings.

FOOD AND DRINK

An à la carte breakfast can be enjoyed wherever you like: in-room, the laidback lounge or the gardens. The relaxed family home-feel continues at dinner: guests can let Chef Diego Bertona know what tickles their fancy and he'll rustle up an exquisite meal to satisfy the palate (or there's a menu to stimulate the imagination). The café is a great little spot, and as the sun begins to set it morphs into a lively bar.

Restaurant: local specialities. Mains from 26€, tasting menu from 70€. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
