Surrounded by rolling hills, small hilltop towns and very little else, Terme di Saturnia lies within the Tuscan Maremma, a relatively unknown and sparsely-populated area of the region near the coast. Rome's Fiumicino Airport is the closest, and you'll need a rental car for the two-hour drive to the resort.

The resort underwent a complete renovation in 2020, but despite pockets of more progressive design the overall look is traditional - shared spaces major on a palette of mostly creams and whites, reflecting the area's gorgeous natural light. The atmosphere at the resort is supremely relaxed, with guests almost permanently clad in swimwear and fluffy bathrobes, even during the aperitivo hour.
As well as the pools and spa facilities the resort is home to a championship 18-hole golf course, tennis court, gym and two boutiques. Other activities include personal training, yoga classes and cooking courses. Exceptional hotel staff strike the right balance between efficient and warm.

Beds are inordinately comfortable, and dotted with cushions in iridescent blue. Smart bathrooms come equipped with the resort's own skincare range, made with Saturnia bioplankton, and the luxuriously soft robes are regularly replaced.

As well as the 1919 (the year the hotel was founded) restaurant, there's a chic bar with a poolside terrace. There's often live music here in the evenings, which adds to the relaxed atmosphere. Trattoria Stellata hides between holes six and 16 on the golf course and serves simple, traditional dishes.
