THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
On the corner of the high street in the New Forest village of Beaulieu, this is a great spot for enjoying the neighbouring Beaulieu Abbey and The National Motor Museum with Lord Montagu's home, Palace House. The towns of Brockenhurst and Lyndhurst are both a 15-minute drive away, and you can head on a river tour from Bucklers Hard maritime museum, which is just a six-minute drive away.
By car: around 2 hours 15 minutes from London and Bristol, and 3 hours from Birmingham. Free parking available.
By train: London Waterloo to Brockenhurst takes 1 hour 30 minutes. The hotel is a 15-minute drive from the station. Book trains to Brockenhurst.
THE LOOK AND FEEL
This is just what you want from a country retreat: large open fires, exposed brickwork, wooden beams and a large light conservatory lounge overlooking a pretty courtyard garden. The Arts and Crafts style Grade II-listed building is covered in wisteria flowers in spring and summer and croquet sets are laid out on the lawn.
THE FACILITIES
A young local team service the hotel with energy and enthusiasm, although beware that if you ring reception, your call may be put through to the sister hotel Careys Manor (not ideal when booking a cab). However, the advantage of the pairing is you can use the SenSpa facilities there. Pets are welcome in selected rooms and areas, including the lounge, conservatory and Monty's pub, but not the Terrace restaurant.
