Nestled in manicured gardens, Summer Lodge is an elegant Georgian manor house reimagined as a countryside retreat

Summer Lodge is located in the idyllic Dorset village of Evershot. It's the ideal place for a country escape, with an indoor pool and a sumptuous spa.

Constructed as a dower house in 1798, Summer Lodge has been recreated as a collection of inviting guestrooms that warmly welcome guests with fresh fruit and flowers and cosy fireplaces.

Combine time relaxing at the hotel with getting out and about in the area, borrowing one of the hotel's bicycles to cycle around the countryside or simply taking a peaceful walk. In the hotel's four-acre garden, there's a croquet lawn and tennis court, or you can find peace with a mindfulness class.

Summer Lodge's splendid restaurant is the heart of the hotel. Dining is a farm-to-table affair where the chef makes the most of flavoursome local produce, including regional cheeses and Dorset truffles. The dishes are perfectly matched with wine choices from Summer Lodge's own sommelier.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Summer Lodge is in the centre of Evershot, a village so attractive it featured in the 1996 film adaptation of Emma. The hotel sits in four acres of grounds, so it's private and peaceful. A half-hour drive will take you to some of the best parts of the Dorset coast. The charming village and unspoilt surrounding countryside are worth exploring on foot, and the coast is 30 minutes by car.

By car: The hotel is 3 hours from London and Birmingham and just under 4 hours from Cambridge. There is plenty of parking on-site.

By train: London Waterloo to Yeovil Junction train station takes 2 hours 20 mins. The hotel is a 15-minute taxi from the station. Book trains to Yeovil Junction.

By plane: Bournemouth Airport (44 miles)

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Summer Lodge fully embraces classic English country-house style - plush furnishings, four-poster beds, giant oil paintings and elegant antiques. It complements the historic house perfectly and feels like you're a guest in a friend's smart country home rather than a hotel. Although children are welcome, the atmosphere is sophisticated and grown-up.

THE FACILITIES

Facilities are excellent: perfectly groomed grounds to wander, a fine-dining restaurant, a well-stocked bar and cosy whiskey lounge, plus a tennis court, spa with Elemis treatments, indoor pool, and gym. The service is excellent - attentive but discreet. Children and pets are made extremely welcome - pets even receive their own welcome pack.

FOOD AND DRINK

The dining room may be very traditional but the menu has a contemporary twist, making the most of local produce and the hotel's vegetable gardens. The resident sommelier will assist you to pair the perfect wine with each dish. Make time for one of the hotel's excellent afternoon teas.

The restaurant: classic English and modern European dishes, fine dining, extensive wine list. Open for dinner, 6.30-8.30pm and Sunday lunch 12.30-1.30pm. Mains from £27.
