Hotel Review: Malmaison, Glasgow, Scotland

This hotel is handy for headline events at the Ovo Hydro, but is within walking distance of all the city-centre temptations, too. George Square, Princes Square shopping centre and the Gallery of Modern Art are all a 15 minute walk.

Malmaison has a 'nothing succeeds like excess' philosophy when it comes to design. The vibe here is certainly more crash-pad than cassocks, but there's lots of ecclesiastical black, lit up with pops of colour (think of a bishop wearing red socks). It is relentlessly laid back - and all about fun.

Staff are unfailingly cheery and attentive. There's room service, same-day laundry and dry cleaning.

Rooms have quirky feature walls, pop art and clashing colours with lots of crushed velvet and moody lighting. Worn, rough terrycloth robes were a disappointment, but there are Arran Aromatics toiletries in the smart black and white tiled bathrooms, and the beds are great.

Its all low-lit glamour in the brasserie, with low vaulted ceilings, gold columns and deep red banquettes. Try anything from steaks and burgers to kimchi karaage, with fail-safe favourite puddings to follow. At breakfast its a buffet or cooked breakfast with self-service coffee, tea (hot water in a flask) and toast.

Chez Mal Brasserie: relaxed dining, creative twists on classics. Open daily for breakfast and dinner. Afternoon tea served Sat-Sun from £27.

Chez Mal Bar: inventive cocktails, bar snacks and sharing platters. Open daily for 12pm.
