OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

While it may not be on Ocean Drive and is not a renovated Art Deco hotel (it was built from scratch on what was formerly a retail strip), that's what keeps prices reasonable at this establishment. In any case, Washington Avenue has plenty going on, from bars and restaurants to museums and clothing stores, while only being a few minute's walk from the beach. If you want a dose of culture, the Wolfsonian museum is practically next door, with a range of eclectic collections and a particularly good shop. There are also restaurants galore, serving everything from Cuban to old-fashioned US fare; the 11th Street Diner dates from 1948 and its comforting menu includes pancakes, cheeseburgers and milkshakes.

By plane: direct flights from London to Miami International take 10 hours. The hotel is a 25-minute drive from the airport. Parking costs $42 per day. Book flights to Miami.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Geometric tiles line the lobby floor, which is also dotted with wooden cut-out artwork from local street artist, Aquarela, depicting playful elements of Miami life (think animals smoking Cuban cigars or flamingos wearing snorkels). A co-working/meeting area has jungle-print curtains and chairs in dark greens and peaches. The atmosphere is buzzy, thanks to the lobby bar and taqueria, and there is an unusual detail in the ceiling; a large porthole which gives a view directly up into the swimming pool.

THE FACILITIES

Alongside the vast pool and rooftop, there is a small gym with Peloton-style bikes and a treadmill. There are also plentiful events on offer on a daily basis, announced on a board by the lobby lifts. These include the aforementioned morning workout sessions, rooftop film screenings, mezcal tastings and more.

BED AND BATH

These are designed to make the most of the space, so they've dispensed with details such as wardrobes in favour of hanging brackets on the walls and under-bed storage. Beds are vast, with firm mattresses, and the compact bathrooms have walk-in showers, own-brand toiletries, and clothing steamers as well as hairdryers.

Room types: King Room, Double Queen Room, Quad Bunk Bed Room, Ocean View Suite

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hairdryer, air conditioning, TV, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

Food is of a high standard, from the authentic tacos on offer at the lobby taqueria, Los Buenos, which has several branches throughout Miami, to the casual, second-floor open-air restaurant, Serena, which serves classic dishes such as Cuban sandwiches, ceviche, tostadas and quesadillas.

Serena: terrace restaurant, Mexican cuisine, sharing plates. Open daily for lunch and dinner.
