Hotel Review: Trefloyne Manor, Pembrokeshire

The hotel is located in the scenic Ritec Valley, at the end of a half-mile drive and within 200 acres of grounds that include ancient woodland and its own 18-hole golf course. It's about two miles, or five minutes' drive, to the centre of the lively Pembrokeshire resort of Tenby, which has several great beaches as well as bars and restaurants galore. Monastic Caldey Island is a popular boat-trip excursion.

By car: around 2 hours from Cardiff, 4 hours 30 minutes from London and 5 hours 30 minutes from Sheffield. There is free parking on site.

By train: The closest train station to the Trefloyne Manor is Penally Station. The hotel is a 6-minute taxi ride from Penally Station. Book trains to Penally.

The hotel spreads around a multi-gabled, largely Victorian stone building and various extensions and outbuildings. It has a rustically modern style, with wood-burning stoves, snug lounges and a bar with slate, wooden and tiled floors, and a big, light-filled conservatory restaurant overlooking the golf course. The atmosphere feels informal and gently bustling.

Trefloyne Manor is owned and run by the Beynon family. On my visit two generations of Beynons were much in evidence, chatting and fussing over guests and making sure all was shipshape. The staff were efficient and helpful; for example we were automatically served a jug of iced water at dinner.

The bedrooms have a smart but not overly fussy rustic-chic look and good quality modern bathrooms. Cosier, more affordable rooms are in the main building, while larger and fancier ones featuring beams, wooden floors and exposed or whitewashed stone walls lie in the nearby former coach house.

The Orangery restaurant serves accomplished, crowd-pleasing British dishes, using fish landed at Tenby harbour, Welsh meat and veg grown in Trefloyne's greenhouse. Think local mussels, fish pie, beef casserole, steak, daily fish specials and traditional puds. Save room for substantial breakfasts - pretty much everything comes from Wales in the traditional cooked platter.
